Normally there
will be two gauntlets released each month between now and November. But to
start the year off right you actually have a choice of three this month.
The first
monthly gauntlet is an either/or choice. You can choose to read any book by Stuart Woods who was born on January 9,
1938 or you can read any book by Agatha
Christie who died on January 12, 1976. These authors are well represented
in our collection and it should not be hard to find a book to read or listen to
from either one you choose.
The second
monthly gauntlet ties in with Black History Month. The challenge is to read any book written by a black author.
This means an author who is black, not a book with black characters. There will
be a list of authors who work for this category in the binder in the reference
department. And you may pick up a copy of the brochure Black Fiction Authors in
the reference department also.
The saying
goes that for every rule there is an exception. So here’s one, if you read the
River City Read book Leaving Gee’s Bend by
Irene Latham you can count it as one of the February Gauntlets. The reason this
is an exception is the book is catalogued at DPL as a juvenile book and the
rules state that nothing catalogued as Juvenile will count for the challenge. But
since we use this Reading Challenge to shamelessly push everything we touch at
the library, we figure why not? To receive credit for this you need to get your
hands on one of the “pass along” copies, (not the checkout copy catalogued in
the library) read it, and fill out the survey on the website. (Remember we are
pushing the River City Read.) And we hope you can make it to the library on
Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 4:00 pm to meet the author Irene Latham.
