October Gauntlets

We are in the homestretch for this year’s Adult Reading Challenge. With only 2 months left to finish, we want to go over the requirements for each level:
·         Page:  read 15 different authors (6 of those must be monthly gauntlets)
·         Squire:  complete 30 quests; of the 30, you must read 25 different authors and at least 8 of them must be monthly gauntlets
·         Knight: complete 60 quests; of the 60, you must read 50 different authors and at least 10 of them must be monthly gauntlets.
If you have any questions or are not sure about any of these requirements, please contact Stephanie or Rhonda for clarification.

You may start turning in your Charters on the 7th of November. Because the Challenge is complicated (anything pertaining to math is considered complicated to StephRhonda) you must surrender your charter in order to be eligible for the prize drawings. The Charters will be returned at the Friends’ Christmas Open House on December 8th. If you are unable to attend the Open House you may stop by StephRhonda’s office (anytime during office hours after December 8th) to get your charter back.

Now for the reason most of you are reading this…

The October gauntlets are:

Read an author who is known for writing Horror stories. There will be a list of authors for this category in the Challenge Notebook. (The notebooks are now in front of StephRhonda’s office.) While the author has to be known to publish horror stories, you are not technically required to read a horror story for this gauntlet.  For example, Stephen King is a name that comes up on all lists of horror authors, but he also writes non-fiction. If you are not inclined to read horror, you can read any of his books and it will still count for this gauntlet. That said, if you decide to read someone not on the list in the book or listed on the horror writers website, you may want to get it cleared as counting, especially if you are going to be close on having the correct number of authors to make the level you wish to complete.

The second gauntlet is to read an author who is LGBTQ. While the LGBT Fiction brochure for DPL is a good place to start, you will need to check to make sure the author you choose is LGBTQ, not just an author who writes LGBTQ. There are a few of the authors on that brochure who will not qualify for this gauntlet.  Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance or clarification on this or any part of the challenge. Thanks for taking the challenge.

Happy Reading!
