June Released Tasks

It’s the time of year when we wish we were kids again…summer reading!  We envy the young ones who are encouraged to read over the summer.   Unfortunately we grown-ups still have bills to pay and are not given the summer off!    The next best option is to work at the library and run a year-long reading challenge for adults.  We consider it a blessing that this is our job!
This month we will have tons of programs for children and teens (which you can read all about on our website http://decatur.lib.al.us/YS/ ).  Adults are not left out, however.  This month we have a poetry writing workshop and local author meet and greet on Thursday, June 15th, a couple of lunch and learn events on the 28th and 30th, and a Friends After Hours event on the 29th featuring Julia Roth. We hope you find time to join us for some of the events we have planned for this month.

The released tasks this month are:

The first task this month is the read a book about dinosaur fossils or the people who look for them. Why is this a task?  During the Gilded Age of American History there was an intense passion for fossil hunting that is sometimes called the Bone Wars or the Great Dinosaur Rush. Paleontologists made some great discoveries at this time in the American West. Unfortunately the two most prominent were in an intense competition that caused them to find new lows in the bid to best one another. In the end, they sparked an interest in paleontology that lasted long after their feud and made many contributions to science and paleontology.

The second task is Rodeo. This sport has its origins in the lifestyle of cowboys who worked cattle on the open range and their Spanish and Mexican predecessors. The first rodeos were informal competitions between cowboys at the end of the cattle drives and round-ups. These informal events have since become a multimillion dollar business. Read any book that features a rodeo.

Happy Reading!
