Painting the town REaD!

Recently, your Library staff got out of the Library and “took it to the streets” with a tent at the Decatur-Morgan Hospital’s 100^th Anniversary block party.  We had balloons, all the information about Summer Reading, and we raffled off a $20 gift card to Panera Bread Company.  We thoroughly enjoyed the chance to get out of the building and mingle with our community, and we got to tell many people about the services we provide.

We liked it so much, in fact, that we’re doing it again.  This Friday, June 19^th, we will have a “booth” at 3^rd Friday Downtown!  We will be in Jones Park on Second Avenue near the fountain and this time we’ve got even MORE fun planned for those who stop by to visit us.   We’re going to have a Lego table set up for kids (of all ages) to create something fun.  We’ll have balloons, bubble gum, and of course, lots of information about the library and what it has available for YOU.  If you take a minute to fill out our very short survey, you’ll get a free gift AND an entry into a raffle for a $25 Starbuck’s gift card!

3^rd Friday has become a tradition in our town and it always offers lots of fun, food and music.  We hope to see you there!

June’s Adult Reading Challenge “Clues”

This month's Portals Book Club will be 

FRIDAY, June 5th from 12n - 2pm in the Community Room.

If you have been into the library lately, you will have noticed that we are in the process of installing  new RFID security. Part of this process has been a weeding of out-of-date and less-than stellar condition books. This means that some of the books in the suggested reading lists have been removed from the collection. If you choose a book from one of these list and the book is no longer in our collection, we apologize.  Please speak with Rhonda or Stephanie and we will be happy to help you find another title.

LGBT:  First, for those who have asked, the letters stand for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. Book must either be written by a person who is LGBT or contain a character who identifies as LGBT. 

Vacation: The book must contain a vacation. Doesn’t have to be the entire book is about a vacation but sometime in the book must be spent on vacation.

Direction: The title of the book must contain one of the four cardinal directions. (North, South, East or West)

June Author: Read any book by an author born in the month of June. A few examples are Dan Brown, Patricia Cornwell, Louise Erdrich, and Deanna Raybourne.

The two mystery clues revealed for the month of June are:

Caribbean: Read any book set in the Caribbean. We are using the broad definition of the Caribbean for this clue. In geographical terms the Caribbean area includes the Caribbean Sea and all of the islands located to the southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Central America and Mexico, and to the north of South America. The list of islands/countries/territories that count for the purpose of this challenge are: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and the US Virgin Islands. 

Audio book/E-book:  June is audio book month so this clue is to listen to any audio book in the collection. This can be a book on CD or any e-audiobook in our Camellia Net collection. We know not everyone has an interest in audio books so you may also read any e-book in our collection. The e-book can be a download from Camellia Net or EBSCOhost.
