The Library is gearing up for a busy fall. We hope you can join us for a few of the many programs and activities we are offering this September. Book Babies, Story Times, LEGO Hour, and Bedtime Math’s Crazy 8s Club will be starting back up for the young ones. Adults get programs from the Library, the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation.  Events hosted by the Library include the Adult Reading Challenge Book Club on the 7th, a Lunch & Learn program all about the River Clay Fine Arts Festival on Saturday, September 9th, Free Movie Nights on the 14th and 28th, 3rd Friday in Jones Park, and a Lunch & Learn program about Mildred Nungester Wolfe and the Decatur Arts on Wednesday, the 20th. We will also have a booth at the River Clay Fine Arts Festival. So stop by and visit us. On top of that the Friends of the Decatur Public Library will host classical guitarist Peter Fletcher on Thursday, the 21st. The Foundation will be sponsoring their annual fundraiser the Shoe Show on the 27th and all proceeds go to support DPL.  For more information about any of the programs offered by DPL please visit http://decatur.lib.al.us/.

The released tasks for this month are:

September is a great month for a road trip or journey and that is the first task for this month. Read any book that is about a road trip or journey that is from one physical place to another. To put it into context for this year’s challenge: think about how the American west was settled. People left the east and traveled by foot, wagon, train or horse to start over.

The second task of the month is the Texas Rangers. Read any book that is about a Texas Ranger, the legendary law enforcement officer –not a baseball player. The modern day Ranger came into being on September 1, 1935. The Ranger history goes back to 1823 when Stephen Austin formed a group of men to range over the territory of Texas where over 600 families had settled.

Happy Reading!

August Released Tasks

This month we have a variety of programs for adults at Decatur Public Library. On August 3rd we will have the monthly book club meeting for the Adult Reading Challenge but it will start at 11:00 am instead of 12:00 pm. We moved it up to accommodate The Great American Eclipse Program that will take place at 2:30 pm in the Youth Services Department the same day. Kevin Alspaugh from the Space and Rocket Center will be here to explain about the eclipse that will take place on the 21st of this month. Everyone who attends the program will receive free eclipse glasses (while supplies last). The program is for all ages, but is being held in the Youth Services Department to allow more room for people to attend.

The Lunch and Learn series will continue with three programs this month. Wylheme Ragland will be speaking at the first two. On Tuesday, August 8th he will present “Successful Women of Old Town Decatur: The Best, Brightest, and Well Connected,” and on Tuesday, August 22nd, he will present “19th Century Aldermen of Old Town Decatur, 1800-1892”. On Saturday, August 26th, artist Frances Tate will present “Celebrating Early Old Town with Art”. Make sure when you come to the library this month to take the time to look at her artwork in the display cases. Her paintings will be on display throughout the month of August.

To finish off the busy month we will resume our Free Movie Nights on the 2nd and 4th Thursday. This month we will show two movies that star Humphry Bogart. See him win the girl from his dashing brother on the 10th and star in the movie version of Dashiell Hammett’s best novel on the 24th. As always the doors will open at 6:15 pm and the movie will start at 6:30 pm.

DPL will be in Jones Park on 2nd Avenue for 3rd Friday Downtown on the 18th of the month. We will be talking about upcoming programs and giving away children’s books. We hope you will join us for one or all of these programs this August.

Now for the released tasks for this month for the Adult Reading Challenge:

To get in the mood for the coming eclipse, the first task is to read any book that is about or contains an astronomical event. This could be an eclipse, a comet, or a meteor headed for earth.

The second task is to read any book that is about or contains an earthquake or volcano. On August 27, 1883 the volcano Krakatoa erupted killing an estimated 36,000 people. It is one of the most deadly eruptions in modern history and considered the first global catastrophe. Because of the telegraph, news of the disaster spread around the world very quickly. The amount of ash in the atmosphere caused bright red sunsets to be seen around the world for years and may have also effected the growth of Saguaro cacti in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona (https://phys.org/news/2016-07-distant-volcanic-eruptions-foster-saguaro.html ).

Happy Reading!
