July Gauntlets

As the temperature outside rises, spend some time inside the cool interior of Decatur Public Library and enjoy the programs and services we offer.  In addition to multiple events for children and teens this month, we have free movies for adults on the 14th and 28th at 6:30pm.  The theme for our July movies is 1980s classics.  There are also two Summer Reading movies planned on July 1st and the 22nd at 5:30pm with fun themes and extras.  We hope you’ll stop by and visit this summer!

To celebrate our nation’s independence, the first gauntlet this month will be to read an AMERICAN AUTHOR.   Pick a book by any author who is a citizen of the United States to receive a stamp for a July gauntlet.

The second gauntlet is another either/or choice.  You can read any YA or adult book by J. K. ROWLING who celebrates her birthday on July 31st OR you can read any book BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, who died on July 7th.  If you choose Rowling, you may read any of her books written under her nom de plume Robert Galbraith also.

Happy Reading!

June Gauntlets

June is a busy month at Decatur Public Library. We will have programs for all ages: children, teens and adults. There will be the sign up events for the children’s and teens Summer Reading Program, Bond movies on adult Free Movie Nights, special story times, author meet and greets, 3rd Friday Downtown, and much more. Make sure to check DPL’s website to stay informed about events and programs your family will enjoy.

June is audio book month, so the first gauntlet is to listen to an audio book that is read by the author. There are several in our collection, some as books on CD and some as eAdiobooks from CamelliaNet. The best thing about an audio book is it leaves your hands free to do other chores or tasks while still getting to hear a story. If you have to ride the lawn mower or pull weeds the time will go much faster if you are listening to a good story at the same time. Just make sure for the challenge, the narrator is also the author of the book.

The second gauntlet is an either/or author choice.  You can either read Larry McMurtry or Louis L’Amour.  These two authors are known for their westerns, but they actually have books in several genres. Between the two of them they are represented in non-fiction, fiction, mystery, and of course westerns. L’Amour has a book of poetry and short story collections that cover crime and adventure. McMurtry has several books of essays and memoirs. They are also both represented in our audio book collections.

Happy Reading and Listening!
