DPL invites you to take part in a free, worldwide digital book club with the Big Library Read

No baking class needed, just a library card. Decatur Public Library is taking part in the Big Library Read program, the world’s largest global eBook reading club through libraries that connects millions of readers around the world with the same eBook at the same time. DPL users can borrow the eBook, Art of the Pie: one of 2016’s best cookbooks from pie-guru Kate McDermott, starting Thursday, March 16 and concluding on Thursday, March 30 by visiting www.camellia.overdrive.com.  Big Library Read is facilitated by OverDrive, the leading platform for eBooks and audiobooks from the library.

Kate McDermott has taught the time-honored craft of pie-making to thousands of people. Her pies have been featured in USA Today, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Real Simple, Oprah.com, NPR and more. In the Art of the Pie she shares her secrets to great crusts, fabulous fillings, and to living a good life. Kate provides dozens of recipes for all the pie combinations you can dream up with hints and tricks helpful to even the most experienced pie baker.

“If you are a first time pie maker, the words in the book are the very same ones I share in the pie making workshops and I hope they will give you the confidence to dip your hands into the baking bowl,” said author, Kate McDermott. “A recipe is a starting place, so feel free to experiment with different seasonings and flavor combinations that please you. I hope you will enjoy the stories in Art of the Pie as well as the recipes. It was a labor of love to write it for you.”

Big Library Read is an international reading program that connects millions of readers around the world simultaneously with an eBook. Discussions about the cookbook, recipes and more can be found on BigLibraryRead.com. The free program runs for two weeks and to get started reading, all that is needed is a DPL library card. Art of the Pie can be read on all major computers and devices, including iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets, Chromebook™ and Kindle® without worrying about wait lists or holds. The eBook cookbook will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, and there are no late fees.

The Big Library Read program is made possible through a partnership between Decatur Public Library, the CamelliaNet consortium, OverDrive and Countryman Press, publisher of Art of the Pie. Library readers voted Art of the Pie as their cookbook choice for Big Library Read. To borrow the eBook, readers can visit www.camellia.overdrive.com.

March Released Tasks

March is a great time to enjoy the library. We always have programs for kids but this month we have two events planned that will be fun for the entire family.

Kick off Spring Break by joining us Friday night, March 24th for our Family Movie Extravaganza. We’ll be showing an old classic with a flying car and have lots of fun crafts, activities, a photo op, and great snacks. All for FREE! The movie starts at 5:30 pm.

To finish off the week of Spring Break come enjoy Delano Park with us to celebrate Take a Walk in the Park Day. Thursday, March 30th from 10 am until 12 noon DPL will be in the park. We will be setting up fun activities for the entire family centered around the Riverwild children’s area. There will be story time, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a princess appearance, and a Story Walk with the book Red Sings from Treetops by Joyce Sidman. We hope you all can join us.

The park offers some really nice spots to sit and read.  If you are taking the Adult Reading Challenge this year, pick out your books for the next two tasks and join us in the park.

In honor of Women’s History Month the first task is to read any book that deals with women’s rights.  Read a novel about a suffragette or read a biography of some of the women who fought hard for women’s rights, and don’t forget that not all women enjoy the freedom most of us in the United States take for granted today.

The second task is to read a book that would be classified as Eco-fiction. By definition eco-fiction is “ecologically oriented fiction, which may be nature-oriented (non-human oriented) or environment-oriented (human impacts on nature). Source: Jim Dwyer’s Where the Wild Books Are: A Field Guide to Eco-Fiction (University of Nevada Press, 2010). You can find more information on the subject at http://eco-fiction.com/ .

There will be a suggested reading list for each of these tasks in the notebook outside our office.

Happy Reading!
