This year the
adult reading challenge is called the Reading Round-Up. The nutshell version of
the challenge is the idea that we are writing a novel based on the theme of the
old west. The tasks are broken into three sections: characters, settings, and
conflicts (both internal and external) that would be encountered by the
characters. You can read books from any genre so long as they contain the tasks
found on the reading log. Like previous years there will also be a couple of tasks
released each month on this blog.
If you are interested in signing up for this
year’s challenge or just want more information please come by the Marketing and
Outreach office, email, or call us. The challenge is open to all patrons 18+.
We also have a book club that meets the first Thursday of each month (12-2pm in
the Community Room) to discuss what we are reading for the challenge. We
welcome all adults who love to read.
The first task
will be the gold rush. There were many instances of the discovery of gold
hastening the settlement of the West. The two best known were the California
gold rush in 1848 and in Alaska in 1896. For this task read any book that
pertains to the gold rush or gold mining. The book does not have to be set in
the United States. Gold mines are found all over the world and any book
pertaining to gold mining works.
Because Texas is such a large part of most folk’s idea of the west, we are making Texas the second task for this month. The most visited historic landmark in Texas is the Alamo, and the battle for the Alamo took place
February 23rd through March 6th in 1836. So this month let’s remember the Alamo and read any book set in the Lone Star state.
Happy Reading!
