National
Library Week April 12-18, 2015
This week, the Decatur Public Library joins libraries nationwide
in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of
libraries, librarians and library workers.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance
sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the
country each April.
Libraries today are more
than warehouses for books; we are doing our part to close the digital divide
and level the playing field by providing free access to information and
technologies that many in our community would be hard pressed to find
elsewhere. Libraries help to ensure the
American dream and promote democracy by providing service to all regardless of
race, ethnicity, creed, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or
socio-economic status; at Decatur Public Library we staunchly believe in that
mission.
The Decatur Public Library serves those who live, work
or attend school in Morgan County by providing: circulating material (including
books, audio books, music, DVDs, software and even puppets), computers,
printers and scanners for public use, digital services (such as eBooks available
for numerous devices, free Wi-Fi, free access to Alabama Virtual Library, Learning
Express, and Homework Alabama); FREE programming for children, teens and
adults; information (our Reference Department answers general information
questions in person, via telephone and email); meeting space (our Community
Room can accommodate up to 60 people for free events open to the public); the Alabama Room
(contains a wide range of resources pertaining to local history and genealogy,
as well as rare and archival items that have been donated to us over the years);
and the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale Room (stocked with books, magazines,
CDs, DVDs and other donations).
The library has always
been a place of unlimited possibilities. Whatever your interest or need, the
library and the library staff are here to provide you the resources you need to
accomplish your goals and dreams.
To support this goal, we
ask that sometime this week you tell one person you know why you love your
library.
If they haven’t been to see us
in a while, tell them what they are missing!
